Life in the thirteen colonies: New York; with Henry Lucas

Our upper elementary class is studying colonial america. They all did reports on different colonies. Henry did New york, Ned did Rhode Island, Liz did Massachusetts, and I did Pennsylvania. Henry is helping me with this post, and is going to teach us about New york.

 “Henry Hudson was one of the first Europeans to land in New york. It was Founded in 1624. Lots of tribes of Native americans lived there first. They were called the Mohawk Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga, Seneca, and Iroquois. The Iroqois lived in a thing called longhouses.

 Duch settlers in New Amsterdam made an agreement with the Mohawk to trade furs for manufactured goods. 

 Peg Leg Pete was one of the worst rulers. He arrived in the Netherlands in 1647. He found the colonie in a shambles. He noted the ‘land-destroying and people expelling wars.’ Animals were no longer allowed to run free in the town. Woman could be fined for raising their skirts to cross a muddy street.  Children went to school 180 days a year.”
